Technical requirements to use the Resource Generator

What sort of computer and software do I need to use the Resource Generator?

There are four essential technical requirements to use the Resource Generator, and several recommendations to help its use.

Essential requirements

  1. You require an Internet connection, with a reasonably modern browser.

  2. Your computer must have Adobe® Acrobat® or Acrobat® Reader™ installed.
The version must be 4 or later.
This software is available for free by clicking on this button:
    Get Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Reader(tm) here

  3. You must have cookies allowed on your browser.
Cookies are used by this site ONLY to link your active sessions with our server. These cookies are deleted when you log off, and not used to store information between sessions.
    • In Internet Explorer version 5 the setting is under "Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom Level". It is called "allow per-session cookies".
    • In Internet Explorer version 6 the setting is under "Tools/Internet Options/Privacy". Choose any level except "Block all cookies". Alternatively, set "allow" for "resourcegenerator.gov.au" in the Web Sites section or allow session cookies in the Advanced section.
    • In Mozilla Firefox, the settings for "Allow sites to set cookies" and "for the originating web site only" are in "Tools/Options/Privacy/Cookies".
If you're concerned about the security of leaving cookies behind, you can set "Keep Cookies" to "until I close Firefox" and close the browser when you've finished.
    • In Netscape Navigator, the settings for "Accept all cookies" or "Accept all cookies that get sent back to the originating server" are in "Edit/Preferences/Advanced"

If you're not sure, go to the BrowserHawk test page and look down the page for the entry on 'CookiesEnabled'. It should say 'True'.

  4. Cache and proxy settings must allow pages to be refreshed.
This means that the cache (stored pages) option must be set to update "every time" (or "automatic"). This is the normal setting, but without it, some aspects of the site will not work. In particular, pages will not always change properly as you use the site.
    • In Internet Explorer, the setting for 'Stored Pages' is in "Tools/Internet Options/General/Temporary Internet files/Settings"
    • In Netscape Navigator, the setting for 'Document in Cache' is in "Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Cache"
  5. Most network providers (ISPs) provide a "Proxy" service, which also caches web pages. This must also be set to allow ASP pages to be updated every time. If you have trouble with pages not being refreshed properly, try disabling Proxy use.

    • In Internet Explorer, the setting for 'Proxy server' is in "Tools/Internet Options/Connections/[your network connection]/Settings"
    • In Netscape Navigator, the setting for 'Configure Proxies to Access the Internet' is in "Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Proxies"
Some network providers enforce proxies, so you may have to contact your provider if you have further problems with proxies.

Please note also that sessions will be logged out if the server receives nothing from a user for more than 45 minutes.
